Everyone's 15% more efficient. Nobody's actually winning.
Here's what happened this earnings season: every single company discovered AI at exactly the same time and achieved exactly the same efficiency gains. Coincidence? No. Economics.
AI adoption in white-collar roles just crossed 60%. Mentions of "AI" and "efficiency" on earnings calls jumped 340% year-over-year. Everyone's suddenly 15% more productive. ChatGPT writes the email, Copilot finishes the code, some algorithm optimizes the spreadsheet. Wonderful. Now what?
If everyone gets 15% more efficient, nobody actually gets ahead. You've just lowered the baseline. Your competitor did it too. Their competitor did it too. The efficiency gains are already baked into analyst expectations, stock prices, and quarterly guidance. You're running faster on a treadmill that's speeding up.
So executives face a choice: accept that productivity gains are now table stakes and compete on something else (good luck with that), or swing the axe and realize gains the old-fashioned way—headcount reduction.

Watch the pattern. Companies announce AI adoption and efficiency improvements. Six weeks later: "strategic workforce optimization." The layoffs suspiciously correlate with the productivity announcements because they're not two separate things. They're the same decision. The AI gains were never really about doing more with the same people. They were about doing the same with fewer people, and needing an earnings call announcement to soften the landing.
Consulting firms are already pricing this in. "AI-enabled workforce restructuring." That's the real growth market. Not AI itself—the professional services around telling you how to fire people with technology on your side.
The companies that move first win, but only because everyone else is on the same path. Once everyone's optimized, you're back to square one, except 20% smaller and angry.
Welcome to the next efficiency frontier. Try not to be in the 15%.
