Nothing documents a death spiral quite like firing the documentarians
Here's a question for the corporate efficiency experts: who covers the media industry when the media industry is too busy firing media people to cover itself?
In 2026, 25 media and entertainment companies have eliminated 11,306 jobs combined—an average of 13.2% of their respective workforces. The BBC alone cut 2,000 positions, representing 9.3% of staff. These aren't theoretical numbers anymore. They're happening to the people who were supposed to report on the people it was happening to.
BBC Sport is scrapping 36 net positions (cutting 41 roles, creating five). That includes four senior posts and seven sports journalist roles. The sports bulletins running 24 hours on BBC News? Gone. Reach, which owns the Daily Mirror and dozens of regional outlets, is cutting 220 jobs while creating 60—a net loss of 160 editorial positions. Forbes, meanwhile, is cutting what it describes as a "small percentage of staff" after revenue shortfalls. The Washington Post cut a third of its newsroom. CBS News shuttered its radio division after 94 years.
The National Union of Journalists called it "devastating." They're not wrong. Journalists are living in "constant fear" after repeated rounds of cuts, according to the NUJ. Morale isn't just down. It's been strategically eliminated.

The cruel irony writes itself: the outlets losing staff are also losing the capacity to cover the industry's implosion with any depth. Press Gazette has been tracking job losses throughout 2026, which means at least one publication is still documenting the apocalypse. Everyone else is too busy implementing it.
This is what a doom spiral looks like when it's efficient. Self-documenting catastrophe. The industry is restructuring around digital-first models with fewer human journalists, which sounds corporate-rational until you realize: fewer journalists means fewer stories about why there are fewer journalists. The feedback loop just keeps shrinking.
Soon there won't be anyone left to write about it. Which might actually be the point.
