Treasury discovers financial warfare plays better with a codename
The Trump administration has discovered what Marvel figured out decades ago: everything sounds more serious with a branded campaign name. Enter Operation Economic Outcast, the Treasury Department's latest effort to convince the world that Iran's economy should cease to exist.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent unveiled the strategy this week with the kind of dramatic flair usually reserved for streaming service announcements. "Iran now faces a very clear choice, with only two paths before them: complete global isolation and a subsistence economy, or a path back to normalcy with an opportunity to rejoin the global economy," he declared. The subtext was thick enough to require subtitles: comply or starve.
The actual mechanics are less cinematic. The U.S. is expanding secondary sanctions across digital assets, technology, gold, aviation, and shipping—basically anywhere Iran might generate revenue or dodge existing restrictions. Nearly 60 entities, individuals, and vessels got hit simultaneously, targeting procurement networks, cyber operations, and oil smuggling rings. It's comprehensive, if not particularly creative.

Bessent's real flex came in threatening secondary sanctions on countries and companies that do business with Iran's "enablers." When pressed, he made clear that even China—Iran's top trading partner—wouldn't get a pass. That's the kind of economic leverage that tends to get the world's attention, codename or not.
The strategy is explicitly designed to maintain pressure through at least the midterm elections, after which, officials hint, military options could return to the menu. For now, it's financial strangulation with a branded wrapper.
Iran's foreign minister, predictably unimpressed, dismissed the whole thing as "desperate." Fair point. The sanctions might be serious. The name still sounds like something pitched at a corporate strategy retreat by someone who just watched Top Gun: Maverick.
