We're not cutting costs. We're just making everyone more efficient at being gone.
Oracle is laying off 21,000 people. Meta is laying off thousands more. Apple, Uber, TikTok, and Microsoft are all running the same playbook. And somehow, in the same breath, they're pouring hundreds of billions into AI infrastructure like the future depends on it.
The math doesn't work. The narrative does.
Across the tech industry, 548 documented layoffs have hit 176,306 people in 2026 alone—760 workers per day. By mid-September, 128,536 tech employees across 299 companies had already lost jobs globally, blowing past 2025's total. Amazon, Oracle, Meta, and Microsoft account for nearly 50,000 of those cuts. The S&P 500 absorbed the news with a shrug, down just 0.07%.
But here's where it gets interesting: these companies aren't drowning. They're reporting record revenues while announcing record layoffs. This isn't survival. It's optimization theater.
The AI excuse is perfect because it's impossible to argue with. Mark Zuckerberg recently explained that AI tools now let a single talented person do the work of entire teams. It's not technically a lie. It's just not the whole story. It gives boards a growth narrative instead of a correction story. It gives departing employees a technological explanation instead of a personal one. It's the Apology AI Phase—AI as corporate excuse machine.

Here's the problem nobody wants to say out loud: only 12% of CEOs report that AI has actually delivered both cost and revenue benefits. Fifty-six percent report zero measurable financial return. None of this. And yet the spending continues.
Companies citing AI as a factor in job cuts have underperformed the Nasdaq by almost 10% in the 30 trading days following their announcements. The market doesn't believe the story either. But the story is cheaper than the truth.
The Alignment Times has covered plenty of corporate cognitive dissonance. We've watched companies preach sustainability while burning through resources. We've seen diversity statements arrive moments after discrimination lawsuits. But this feels different. This is real people, real jobs, real timing—all laundered through a technology that hasn't proven it's worth the investment.
Welcome to the future. It's more efficient. There are just fewer of you in it.
