Trump Admin Cuts Anthropic Over Supply Chain Risk (Of What, Exactly?)

Trump Admin Cuts Anthropic Over Supply Chain Risk (Of What, Exactly?)

Pentagon discovers AI company poses greater threat than actual supply chains

Danny FiskSeptember 9, 2026 5 min read

The Trump administration has ordered US government agencies to cut ties with Anthropic, the AI company founded by former OpenAI executives Dario and Daniela Amodei. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth cited supply chain "risk" as the rationale for the move, a phrase so perfectly vague it could apply to literally any company that exists in the modern economy.

Let's sit with this for a moment. An AI research company is now classified as a supply chain threat. Not because of anything Anthropic actually does—the company doesn't manufacture semiconductors, rare earth minerals, or any physical components that might, say, power critical infrastructure. Anthropic makes software. They train language models. They publish research papers. They're about as much a supply chain in the traditional sense as a law firm is a logistics company.

Hegseth's declaration marks a fascinating inversion in how the government talks about national security. We're living in an era where actual supply chains—the ones that move physical goods through ports controlled by increasingly complex geopolitical actors—are treated as inevitable facts of life. But an American AI company? That's where we draw the line.

This isn't about protecting anything. It's about signaling. The move serves multiple audiences: it appeals to the MAGA crowd that views Silicon Valley with suspicion, it creates the impression of toughness on AI (without actually regulating AI in any coherent way), and it positions the administration as doing something about China (even though Anthropic isn't Chinese and doesn't operate in China). It's security theater dressed up as supply chain policy.

What makes this particularly rich is that genuine supply chain vulnerabilities—lithium dependencies, Taiwan's semiconductor dominance, rare earth mineral concentration—remain largely unaddressed. But those would require actual policy work. This? This is a press release that sounds decisive while requiring nothing except that a few government employees stop using Claude.

The geopolitics of AI just got weirder, and the supply chain just became whatever Pete Hegseth says it is.
